Many of you who land on this page probably are quite aware of exactly what a thicknesser planer is and really need no further information about what one can do for you and how one can help out in your workshop.
For those of you that are unsure of exactly what one is, in a nutshell, it’s a machine that shaves off wood to change the thickness of that wood. That’s it. Right, very basic.
A thicknesser planer essentially has three parts to it: the cutting head, in feed and out feed rollers and an adjustable table. The cutting head will have cutting knives to do the shaving of your wood. The rollers will aid in pulling the wood through the machine and the table is what the wood sits on while it goes through the machine and is typically adjustable to the thickness you want to make the wood.
Of course, on some planers the details vary slightly. Some have three knives, some have 2. Some have power rollers, some have rollers that simply support the work while you feed the wood in manually. Others still have stationary tables and adjustment is done by moving the knives relative to the wood.
Ultimately, the result is the same. Smoothing and changing the thickness of the wood.
On the market there are quite a handful of them available. One that is quite common and made by a reputable company is the Makita 2012NB, it’s picture is at the top of the page. This is probably one of the better thicknesser planers on the market for average to just above average users.
It’s reasonably priced and it works extremely well. You can read more reviews and more detailed description here.
If a person happens to be looking for one that is a bit more robust and more industrial then you might want to take a look at the Powermatic Model 209. This is one beefy bad boy and it’s extremely difficult finding anybody to say bad things about it.
This one is more suited to those that are looking for something to use on an extremely heavy, daily and almost all day basis. Besides, the thing weighs right around 700 pounds so it’s fairly easy to see how it can take a good beating. It’s built to withstand usage punishment like that and it shaves wood smooth and accurately despite how old it is and how long it’s been used.
